What are hydraulic hose fittings used for?

These are unique fittings that are used to connect various components of a hydraulic system such as:

  • Tubes
  • Pipes
  • Pumps
  • Valves
  • Cylinders

It helps direct and contain the flow of hydraulic fluid in a system. It also used to prevent leaks while maintaining pressure within the system.

Does these fittings always come in pair?

It is very common for hydraulic fittings to come in pair referred to as the male and female connector. Male connectors, also referred to as a plug, has a solid pin or portion at the center of the conductor. Female connectors, referred to as a jack, are identified by the hole that accepts the pin or solid portion of the male connector.

Different types of hydraulic fittings based on materials

Based on materials, hydraulic fittings can be classified as:

Stainless Steel

This has a very high resistance to heat. It is commonly used in industrial and commercial applications.

Aluminum

This type of fitting has a high corrosion resistance but low tensile strength. It is commonly used for plumbing and is often alloyed with silicon, copper, manganese, zinc and other materials to improve its strength and durability.

Plastic

This is further subdivided into polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), poly-vinyl-chloride (PVC) and Fluororesin (PTFE/PFA/PVDF).

Brass

This is a very strong, durable and corrosion resistant type of hose fitting. It also has good conduction properties and high temperature ductility. This makes it a very common material used in tube fitting metals.

Hydraulic online has various types of hydraulic fittings for your needs. Talk to us so we can help you find the right one. Otherwise, we can also custom fit these fittings for you.

Tips in choosing the right hydraulic hose fitting

When choosing your hydraulic fitting, it is important to consider the following:

  • Fitting configuration
  • Flow rate
  • Material of the conductor
  • Piping size
  • Vibration
  • Working pressure

Depending on the above considerations, choose the material that will best suit your requirements. Often, this is based on the type of fluid that will flow into your hydraulic system and the ambient conditions surrounding it.

You should also consider the geometry of your fitting. These is often described in letters, which also resembles the fitting shape. This may be referred to as L, T, Y or +. At times, it can also be represented by increments of 45° or 90°.
