ENGMATTEC Double Acting Air Hydraulic Foot Pump 10000 psi
ENGMATTEC WPA-4D Double Acting Air Hydraulic Pump – 700 bar (10,000 psi), 3.8 L (232 cu in) Usable Steel Reservoir
Connect the WPA-4D to a compressed air line at 2.8–8.3 bar (40–120 psi) and this pump builds 700 bar (10,000 psi) of hydraulic pressure at 100 psi.
You need no electric motor, no power lead and no hand lever to stroke.
It has Two oil ports and a 4-way, 3-position hand actuated valve that let it drive a 10,000 psi (700 bar) ratered double acting cylinder out under power and back under power. This is a matched pump for the YDH-Series double acting hollow cylinders and the CD-Series solid double acting cylinders.
The pump weighs 10 kg (22 lb) and has a steel reservoir holding 3.8 L (232 cu in) of usable oil, enough to fully advance a 100 tonne class cylinder through 250 mm (9.8 in) of stroke. This Pump comes with a 2 year limited warranty.
700 bar (10,000 psi) from 6.9 bar (100 psi) shop air
Oil flow: 1.16 L/min (70.8 cu in/min) at no load, and 0.15 L/min (9.15 cu in/min) at 700 bar
• Air use: 340 L/min (12 CFM) at 6.9 bar (100 psi)
• Weight: 10 kg (22 lb)
Oil Supply Notice
To comply with postage regulations effective 10 August 2026, this pump ships with an empty reservoir.
Fill it with 3.8 L (232 cu in) of clean Light ISO 32 hydraulic oil or Dextron III Transmission Oil before first use.
How It Works
An air motor drives a small hydraulic piston pump. Compressed air at 2.8–8.3 bar (40–120 psi) acts on a large air piston, which multiplies the pressure on a much smaller hydraulic piston to reach 700 bar (10,000 psi) with 100 psi of air pressure. Rotating the top handle through a 90 degree angle runs the pump and directs oil flow in either direction, stopping in the middle 45 degree (straight) position stops the pump and holds the load. This leaves the other hand free to steady the cylinder, run a nut down a threaded bar or watch the pressure gauge. (all Supplied Separately)
The manual 4-way, 3-position valve sends oil where you need it:
- Advance: oil goes to the cylinder's advance port and the ram extends.
- Hold: both ports are closed and the ram stays where it is.
- Retract: oil goes to the retract port and the ram is driven back under power.
Flow is highest at low pressure, at 1.16 L/min (70.8 cu in/min), so the ram closes up to the load quickly. It slows to 0.15 L/min (9.15 cu in/min) as pressure rises to 700 bar (10,000 psi), which gives fine control at full tonnage, where it matters most.
What the Numbers Mean on the Job
| Cylinder (YDH-Series example) | Oil to advance 100 mm (3.94 in) | Approach time at no-load flow |
|---|---|---|
| 33 t class – 47.8 cm² (7.41 in²) | 0.48 L (29.2 cu in) | about 25 seconds |
| 60 t class – 89.6 cm² (13.89 in²) | 0.90 L (54.7 cu in) | about 46 seconds |
| 100 t class – 143 cm² (22.17 in²) | 1.43 L (87.3 cu in) | about 74 seconds |
Times are calculated from the rated no-load flow of 1.16 L/min (70.8 cu in/min). Once the ram meets the load and pressure climbs, flow drops towards 0.15 L/min (9.15 cu in/min), so the final working stroke is slower and more controllable. As a rule of thumb, the 3.8 L (232 cu in) usable reservoir should exceed the full advance volume of the cylinder you connect.
Why Air Over Hydraulic, and Why Double Acting
- No electrics at the pump: it runs anywhere a compressor or service-truck air line reaches, without a power lead, generator or extension cord.
- No hand stroking: a hand pump at 700 bar (10,000 psi) can take dozens of hard lever strokes per cylinder stroke. Here the air motor does the work and the operator controls it with one turn of the hand.
- Powered retract: a single acting pump can only push. It relies on a spring or the load to return the ram. The WPA-4D's second port drives the ram home, horizontally, upside down or against a load that won't push back.
- Hold position: the centre position of the valve holds the cylinder's position while you set a nut, take a reading or reposition a pull plate.

Applications
Mining and earthmoving – field service: run a YDH hollow cylinder on a threaded bar to push and pull pivot pins and bushes from the air system on a service truck, with no generator needed at the machine.
Civil and construction – anchor and tendon testing: stage loads on rock bolts and ground anchors with a hollow cylinder. Use the hold position to take readings, and powered retract to step the load down under control.
Plant maintenance – bearings, couplings and gears: drive pull plates and through-rods for repeated short strokes, the hold positions leaves both hands free to set up and adjust between strokes.
Fabrication and workshops – pressing and straightening: power a double acting cylinder in a press frame or tie-rod fixture from the workshop air line, and retract it under power ready for the next part.
Rail, marine and heavy transport – on-site repairs: press and pull bushes, couplings and pins wherever there is a compressor, including depots and wharves where running a power lead to the job is impractical.
How to Choose
- Check your air supply. Your compressor needs to deliver at least 340 L/min (12 CFM) of free air at 6.9 bar (100 psi) to run the pump at its rated output. A smaller compressor will still run the pump, but more slowly as the tank pressure drops.
- Check the oil volume. Multiply the cylinder's effective area by its stroke. The result should be less than the 3.8 L (232 cu in) usable reservoir volume.
- Make sure you need double acting. If your cylinder is single acting with spring return, a single acting pump is the simpler choice.
- Order the options. You will need two 700 bar (10,000 psi) hoses with couplers, a 700 bar gauge and adaptor, an air fitting and hydraulic oil to fill the reservoir.
Technician's Advice
Always put a 700 bar (10,000 psi) gauge in the circuit. The pump will reach full pressure, and on a double acting cylinder the pull (retract) side has a smaller area than the push side, so it delivers less tonnage at the same pressure. The gauge is the only way to know what force you are applying.
Fit a water trap or filter-regulator on the air line close to the pump. Moisture and scale from the compressor line are a leading cause of air motor wear. Keep the air supply within 2.8–8.3 bar (40–120 psi), because running above that does not raise the hydraulic rating and only stresses the air side.
When filling the empty reservoir, fully retract the cylinder first and fill to the level mark, not to the top. The headroom between the 3.8 L (232 cu in) usable volume and the 5.0 L (305 cu in) capacity is there to take returning oil. Check the oil level again after the first few full cycles, once the air has bled out of the hoses and cylinder.
Safety Notice
- Connect and fully tighten both hydraulic couplers before running the pump. A half-engaged coupler can block oil flow and trap pressure.
- Never exceed 700 bar (10,000 psi). Use only hoses, couplers and fittings rated to 700 bar or higher.
- Disconnect the air supply before connecting or disconnecting hydraulic hoses, or before servicing the pump.
- Never stand in line with a loaded ram, bar or stud. Mechanically support any load before working under or near it.
- Read the operating and safety manual before first use.
Warranty
Every ENGMATTEC WPA-4D carries a 2 year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, when it is used within its rated pressure and air supply range, with clean hydraulic oil and filtered air. Seal kits and service support are available through our workshop.
